A favorite with locals and out-of-towners alike, Café du Monde in the French Market is a happening place that’s been in business since 1862.  Bustling with activity day and night, Café du Monde is almost always filled to capacity.  The wait staff weave through the cluster of tables and chairs serving up the house specialty, fried squares of dough called beignets, usually accompanied by a steaming cup of café au lait (½ hot coffee and ½ hot milk). The menu, which handily, is stamped to the napkin dispenser on the table, consists of coffee (black, au lait or iced), milk (regular or chocolate), orange juice, soft drinks, water and beignets (3 per order and covered with a heap of powdered sugar).  We recommend the café au lait and one order of beignets per person.  Café du Monde is the place to rest your feet and enjoy the city’s best ‘anytime’ pastry.
